£312m Hospital Transformation in the Midlands Approved

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust has given the green light to a £312m revamp of two Midlands hospitals, with construction set to begin immediately.

The transformation programme, which will be carried out by the joint venture of Vinci and Sir Robert McAlpine known as Integrated Health Projects (IHP), will see major upgrades to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital in Telford.

“The plans include the construction of a purpose-built emergency department at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, while planned surgery will be centralized at the Princess Royal Hospital.”

Both sites will also receive enhanced urgent care facilities, as well as new midwife-led units, endoscopy services, and other important medical capabilities.

State-of-the-art

The new-build emergency care facility at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital will house an acute medical floor, a critical care unit, and services for maternity, children's health, gynaecology, and neonatal care. The development will also feature a new entrance, improved hospitality amenities, and an enhanced patient drop-off area.

Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust believes the new model will enable them to deliver high-quality, sustainable healthcare services for patients in modern, fit-for-purpose facilities. The trust states that the "clinically led programme will provide faster access to the right care and clinicians, [and] result in shorter waiting times for planned surgeries and shorter hospital stays for our patients."

In addition to the major construction work, the trust says it will continue ongoing investments at both hospitals and further develop community-based healthcare services.

IHP, the design and construction partner for the scheme, was selected through the ProCure23 framework. The joint venture, established more than 20 years ago, specialises in the delivery of health infrastructure projects. IHP is also currently working on two projects under the government's New Hospital Programme - the delayed £1bn Whipps Cross Hospital in north-east London and the £105m National Rehabilitation Centre for Nottingham University Hospitals Trust.

The approval of this £312m transformation marks a significant investment in modernising and enhancing healthcare facilities in the Midlands region, positioning the Shrewsbury and Telford hospitals to provide high-quality, efficient, and patient-centred care for years to come.
